Blue Bottle Coffee
Bay Area roaster that fused obsessive freshness with minimalist design and global scale.
Blue Bottle Coffee was founded by clarinetist James Freeman in Oakland in 2002, beginning at a farmers' market with a pledge to sell only coffee roasted within the previous 48 hours. Its minimalist aesthetic, single-origin focus, and meticulously engineered cafés helped bring third-wave coffee to a design-conscious mainstream, and the brand expanded across the US and into Japan and South Korea. A majority stake was acquired by Nestlé in 2017, accelerating global growth. Blue Bottle's blue logo and pour-over ritual became emblematic of specialty coffee's move from niche to lifestyle.
