Origin Story
In 2020, with help from the nonprofit CRS and funding from USAID, we convened a coffee quality event for smallholder cooperatives in Guatemala that we called Intelligentsia ECWx. We were impressed with the three women who represented the COOPESQUI coop, and even more impressed with the coffee they offered us. We sourced one small lot from them that same year, and never looked back. This is the fourth consecutive year we have worked with COOPESQUI, and the coffee just keeps getting better. This lot, grown by women and sourced from an organization run by women, is the largest of the three single-origin lots we sourced this season from COOPESQUI.
Sensory
The jammy sweetness of this coffee is accentuated by the soft citrus note, and is rounded out by a buttery-like texture akin to a shortbread cookie.

Context
Produced by COOPESQUI, the Guatemala La Florida is a standout offering from Intelligentsia Coffee. This selection highlights the distinct character of beans grown in Guatemala, a country renowned for its diverse microclimates and volcanic soils. In the cup, this coffee presents a profile defined by jammy sweetness and soft citrus, balanced by a buttery-like texture and the comforting finish of a shortbread cookie.
When evaluating such complex profiles, it is helpful to reference the flavor wheel to better identify the nuances between fruit-forward acidity and baked-good sweetness. While every harvest varies, coffees from this region are often celebrated for their structural integrity and clean, approachable profiles. This particular lot from COOPESQUI exemplifies the meticulous processing standards that have made the region a staple for specialty coffee enthusiasts seeking both depth and consistency in their daily brew.
