From the roaster

Say hello to Espresso Futurista, our a limited-time, robusta-forward espresso blend.

Robusta has long played a supporting role in classic Italian espresso, but it doesn’t usually take the lead. We decided to make this blend after sourcing exceptional coffee from Java and wanting to show what it’s capable of. Half of this unconventional blend is a fruity Java natural robusta from Garut Regency in West Java, balanced by a chocolatey washed Guatemala arabica from Huehuetenango in western Guatemala.

The result isn’t what you’d find at your typical American café, and it’s not quite what you’d find in Italy either. It lives in the space between tradition and new wave. Expect a bold, full-bodied shot with an especially creamy texture and notes of Brazil nut, nutmeg, and pear brandy.

Context

The Futurista Espresso, crafted by Mr. Espresso, highlights the distinct character of beans sourced from Guatemala · Huehuetenango. This specific lot undergoes a washed process, a method often utilized to emphasize the inherent clarity and acidity of the coffee cherry. While washed coffees are frequently celebrated for their clean, bright profiles, this particular espresso presents a unique sensory experience defined by notes of Brazil nut, nutmeg, and pear brandy.

When evaluating such complex profiles, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better categorize the interplay between nutty, spiced, and fruit-forward characteristics. By focusing on the traditional processing techniques of the Huehuetenango region, this espresso offers a balanced cup that bridges the gap between deep, earthy undertones and delicate, spirit-like aromatics. It serves as a compelling example of how regional terroir and meticulous processing work in tandem to shape the final espresso experience.
