Peace Coffee was established in 1996 when the non-profit Institute for Agriculture & Trade Policy purchased two containers of Mexican coffee at a fair price, creating Peace Coffee to sell it. Originally a non-profit, the company transitioned to private ownership in 2018 when CEO Lee Wallace purchased the brand. Operating from an eco-friendly facility with solar panels, geothermal heating, and a rooftop garden since 2002, Peace Coffee co-founded Cooperative Coffees in 1999 alongside nine other like-minded roasters to directly import fair trade and organic coffee, remaining that organization's largest member. The roaster works exclusively with farmer partners across countries including Honduras, Ethiopia, Colombia, and Peru, emphasizing equity and transparency throughout its supply chain. Peace Coffee achieved its first B-Corp certification in 2018 and continues bicycle delivery to local co-ops and coffee shops, a practice dating to 1997. The company describes its mission as making exceptional coffee while doing right by everyone involved in the process.
