Kirinyaga, immediately east of Nyeri on the slopes of Mount Kenya, is home to some of the country's most sought-after washing stations — names like Kiangoi, Karimikui, and Kii regularly appear on specialty menus worldwide. Smallholder members of cooperative societies deliver cherry to these factories, where classic Kenyan double-washing and clean-water fermentation produce coffees of extraordinary clarity: blackberry and blackcurrant, sweet citrus, and a sparkling, almost effervescent acidity. SL28 and SL34 remain prized for cup quality, complemented by Ruiru 11 and Batian for disease resistance. Kirinyaga demonstrates how Kenya's factory-level traceability turns smallholder cherry into world-class micro-lots.
