From the roaster

The Buliza coffee washing station sits high in the hills of the Rulindo district, a short drive from Rwanda's  bustling capital of Kigali. Farmers belonging to the UCOCARU cooperative union bring their fresh coffee cherries to Buliza for processing, under the care of the washing station's experienced quality team. We’re once again sharing this lot as a dark-roasted single origin as a nod to our many customers who prefer this style of roasting. We taste deep notes of fig alongside syrupy notes of molasses and dark chocolate.

Context

The Buliza Dark Roast, sourced from the Rulindo region of Rwanda, represents a collaborative effort by the UCOCARU cooperative. As a dark roast offering from Counter Culture Coffee, this selection emphasizes a profile defined by deep, resonant sweetness. While lighter roasts often highlight the bright acidity inherent in high-elevation African coffees, darker profiles are frequently sought for their ability to develop rich, caramelized sugars and heavy body.

In this specific lot, the cup character is marked by notes of fig, molasses, and dark chocolate. These descriptors align with the deeper, sugar-browning categories found on the flavor wheel, which are often amplified through the roasting process. By focusing on these dense, comforting flavors, the Buliza Dark Roast showcases the versatility of Rwandan production, moving away from the tea-like clarity often associated with the region’s lighter-roasted counterparts to provide a grounded, intense experience.
