Context

Sourced from the remote Marañón River Valley in Peru, this coffee is produced by the Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros de la Cuenca del Rio Marañón. As a region, Peru has gained recognition for its diverse microclimates, which often contribute to the nuanced profiles found in high-quality South American lots. This specific offering from Intelligentsia Coffee is characterized by a distinct confectionary-like sweetness balanced by notes of dried fruit.

When evaluating such profiles, enthusiasts often look to the flavor wheel to categorize these complex sugar-browning and fruit-forward sensations. While general coffee processing methods can significantly influence the final cup—with natural-processed coffees often exhibiting heavier fruit characteristics and washed coffees frequently highlighting cleaner acidity—the specific techniques employed by the producers in the Marañón River Valley work in tandem with the local terroir to create this unique expression. This lot serves as a compelling example of the collaborative efforts currently shaping the specialty coffee landscape in Peru.
