From the roaster

Discovered in Brazil during the late 19th century, the Maragogipe variety has become well-known for its enormous bean size and big flavors. Though its popularity has waned, many Nicaraguan producers have kept up the tradition of cultivating this unique variety. We're excited to present this lot grown on the Lovo family’s Finca La Victoria. Every year, this lot of Maragogipe is one of the best examples of the variety we taste from Latin America. Look for flavors of plum and apple, wrapped in a syrupy body.

Context

Produced by the Lovo family in Nicaragua, this offering from Counter Culture Coffee highlights the distinct characteristics of the Maragogipe varietal. Often referred to as "elephant beans" due to their unusually large size, Maragogipe plants are known for their low yields and specific environmental requirements. While the sensory profile of any given coffee is influenced by its unique terroir and processing method, tasters often consult the flavor wheel to better identify the nuanced acidity and sweetness found in the cup. In this specific lot, the roaster identifies prominent notes of plum and apple, providing a bright, fruit-forward experience. By focusing on this rare varietal, the Lovo family continues to showcase the diversity of Nicaraguan coffee production, offering a distinct profile that stands apart from more common cultivars found in the region.
