From the roaster

Intango traces its roots back to a USAID-funded initiative that transformed Rwanda’s coffee industry. The PEARL project invested at every stage of production, laying the foundation for Rwanda’s specialty coffee sector. Counter Culture engaged early, mentoring local professionals, including Gilbert Gatali, who later purchased one of the first PEARL-constructed washing stations and founded Intango. Gilbert believes in coffee's potential to transform lives, and his passion for coffee and the people behind it is inspiring to witness. We taste notes of apricot, citrus, and black tea—a classic Rwanda profile that keeps us coming back year after year.

Context

Intango, produced by Gilbert Gatali, represents the vibrant profile of Rwandan coffee. Sourced by Counter Culture Coffee, this lot highlights the distinct characteristics often found in the region’s high-quality harvests. When evaluating such coffees, tasters frequently identify bright, acidic qualities and nuanced aromatics that align with the flavor wheel categories of stone fruit and tea.

In the cup, Intango presents a profile defined by apricot, citrus, and black tea. While Rwandan coffees are often celebrated for their clean, crisp acidity and complex sweetness, the specific experience of this lot is shaped by the meticulous processing methods employed by Gatali. By focusing on these core flavor markers, drinkers can better appreciate the balance between the delicate tea-like notes and the more pronounced fruit characteristics. This selection serves as a compelling example of the clarity and precision that define contemporary coffee production in Rwanda.
