From the roaster

The Intango coffee washing station is owned by Gilbert Gatali, a widely recognized leader in Rwanda’s relatively young and thriving specialty coffee sector. Gilbert believes in coffee's potential to transform lives and his passion for coffee and the people behind it are inspiring to witness. This year, we’re excited to explore how a darker roasting style offers new dimensions to the delicate and fruity flavors often found in Rwandan coffees. At this roast level, we first notice a full and velvety body complemented by sweet flavors of dark chocolate and dried fig.

Context

Produced by Gilbert Gatali in Rwanda, the Intango – Dark Roast is a distinct offering from Counter Culture Coffee. This selection highlights the roaster’s approach to developing deep, resonant profiles, specifically showcasing notes of dark chocolate and dried fig. While lighter roasts often emphasize the inherent acidity of a bean, dark roasts are frequently sought after for their bold, caramelized sweetness and heavier mouthfeel.

When evaluating such profiles, tasters often look for how the roasting process interacts with the coffee's origin characteristics. To better understand the nuances of these specific descriptors, one might consult the flavor wheel to identify the broader categories of sweetness and fruit-forward tones present in the cup. By focusing on the interplay between Gatali’s production and the roaster’s precise heat application, this coffee provides a classic, robust experience that remains grounded in the specific terroir of its Rwandan origin.
