From the roaster

Coffees from the Jaén province’s southwestern districts have historically been bulked into large commodity blends, destined for anonymity. With crucial support from Origin Coffee Lab, we started digging deeper into these areas in 2019. What we found were small coffee-producing communities in and around the remote district of Colasay, producing some of our favorite coffees in Peru. A blend of this year’s selections from those farms, La Viuda bursts with juicy notes of black cherry and white grape.

Context

Sourced from the Colasay district of Jaén, Peru, La Viuda represents the distinct character of high-elevation coffee production in this region. As a selection from Counter Culture Coffee, this lot highlights the specific terroir of the northern Peruvian highlands, where unique microclimates often contribute to vibrant acidity and complex sweetness. When evaluating coffees with profiles like black cherry and white grape, it can be helpful to reference the flavor wheel to better identify the nuances of stone fruit and orchard fruit characteristics.

While every harvest varies, Peruvian coffees are frequently noted for their balanced, approachable profiles that bridge the gap between bright, citrus-forward acidity and deeper, sugar-browning sweetness. La Viuda serves as a compelling example of the quality emerging from Jaén, offering a clean cup that showcases the careful processing methods employed by local producers in this evolving coffee-growing landscape.
