From the roaster

This coffee comes to us via Mountain Harvest, a company working to improve the quality of Ugandan coffee while making coffee communities more sustainable. We’ve been partners since 2018, their first season of production, noting and encouraging improvements over time. For the second year in a row, we are thrilled to offer Makali as a subscriber-exclusive product.

Forty-five women in the Makali community produced this coffee. Women in eastern Africa do much of the work to produce coffee, but are not often encouraged to participate in its trade. Mountain Harvest’s gender-equity training has helped transform these women’s ownership over their product. In addition, the organization’s technical assistance, microfinance program, and diversification projects positively impact the farmers and the quality of their coffee.

Context

The Makali – Subscriber Exclusive, sourced from the Makali region of Uganda, represents a focused collaboration with the producer Mountain Harvest. As a Counter Culture Coffee offering, this lot highlights the evolving landscape of Ugandan specialty production. When evaluating coffees from this origin, enthusiasts often look for distinct profiles that reflect the unique microclimates of the Rwenzori Mountains.

To better understand the nuances present in this specific selection, it is helpful to reference the flavor wheel as a guide for identifying complex aromatic compounds. While general characteristics of Ugandan coffees can range from bright, citric acidity to deep, syrupy sweetness, each lot remains a unique expression of its specific harvest conditions and processing methods. By engaging with this subscriber-exclusive release, drinkers gain insight into the ongoing efforts of Mountain Harvest to elevate quality standards within the region, providing a clear window into the current potential of Ugandan specialty coffee.
