From the roaster

Pedro Patana’s commitment to developing a coffee community in the depths of Bolivia’s tropical Yungas region is only surpassed by his drive to provide for his wife and family. Out of necessity and hardship, Pedro and his wife put down roots in a largely uninhabited area where they’d be the first to plant coffee alongside other essential crops. As the founder of CENAPROC, a cooperative established in 1992, Pedro still strives to improve coffee production among his neighbors, focusing on quality, organic practices and shared access to resources. Pedro’s hard work shines through in this year’s coffee harvest where we experience the sweet taste of dried cherry and milk chocolate.

Context

Produced by Pedro Patana in the Yungas region of Bolivia, this single-origin offering represents the unique terroir of one of the country’s most prominent coffee-growing areas. As a selection from Counter Culture Coffee, this lot highlights the specific character of Patana’s harvest, which the roaster identifies through notes of dried cherry and milk chocolate.

When evaluating coffees with such distinct profiles, it is helpful to reference the flavor wheel to better categorize the nuances of fruit-forward and cocoa-toned beans. While every harvest is unique, coffees from the high-altitude slopes of the Yungas are often recognized for their balanced acidity and sweetness. By focusing on the work of individual producers like Pedro Patana, roasters can showcase the specific regional characteristics that define Bolivian coffee production. This particular lot serves as a clear example of the quality achievable through careful cultivation in this challenging, mountainous landscape.
