From the roaster

This farm is special to Elixr. We are proud to have purchased coffee for many years making it a household name to Elixr customers.

In 2014 we had the privilege of visiting El Injerto for the first time, where Arturo Jr. (Yuyo) shared with us the process-driven and detailed-oriented operation he was running.  The processing station was the cleanest, most immaculate operation I have ever seen, even to this day.  The Aguirre family continually reinvests all of their premiums back into more and more production improvements- and it really painted a picture of what Direct Trade can help accomplish.  We saw that awarding producers with premium contracts, when sharing an aligned vision, can can result in cycle of higher quality and higher premiums!

As a result of generations of continual improvements, El injerto has been able to win an unprecedented 8 first place finishes in the Cup of Excellence.  This is a competition equivalent to winning the Super Bowl in a producing country.  It is incredibly difficult to win even once.  In the competition, Coffees are cupped blind over and over and over again and scored by national and international judges.  The Pacamara variety, which I fell in love with, has won in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015.  The Maragogype took third in 2011, the Legendary Gesha most recently won, and took second in 2017.

The dedication to quality does not end at the farm, they also roast their own coffee and have a coffee shop that keeps their coffees in their country. “We believe that our fellow Guatemalans deserve to drink the best coffee that Guatemala produces. That is why we leave here par of what we export to sell locally.” They use many tools such as hydroelextive power plants, compost, reusing waste products in processing, and more to be purposeful in sustaining their farm and ecosystem.

Context

El Injerto's washed Malawi Geisha from Guatemala's high-altitude La Libertad region in Huehuetenango showcases the varietal's characteristic elegance. Geisha is prized globally for its distinctive floral and tea-like clarity, and this lot reflects that profile through its mandarin orange brightness and creamsicle sweetness—a balance of citrus and vanilla-toned creaminess with delicate white peony florality. Grown between 1500–2000 meters, the elevation supports the complexity these coffee plants are known for, while the washed process preserves the varietal's cleaner, more articulate cup expression. The result is a refined, aromatic coffee that rewards attention.
