From the roaster

The Shantawene farm placed 7th out of more than 1,400 entries in the 2020 Cup of Excellence in Ethiopia. While this coffee is different from the competition submission, it comes from the same site and harvest and reflects the overall quality. Expect a complex yet intense cup that shines across brew methods, including pour over, cold brew, and espresso.

In 2006, brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo founded Daye Bensa, a coffee grower and exporter in Ethiopia. The company exports coffee from its Shantawene farm as well as from smallholder out growers in the villages of Shantawene, Karamo, and Bombe.

The Shantawene lot is named after the village where most of the farm’s workers live, many of whom are women.

Each year, Daye Bensa hosts an Out Growers Day, bringing together nearly 1,000 farmers to celebrate their harvests and receive second payments for their coffee cherry contributions. The top three farmers from each village are also recognized with certificates and cash prizes for consistently delivering high quality cherries.

Looking ahead, Daye Bensa plans to expand its work with farmers, with a focus on supporting women producers and partnering with Hawassa University to advance coffee quality research.
