From the roaster

Nyeri County is one of Kenya’s most celebrated coffee regions, located between Mt Kenya and the Aberdare ranges just east of the Great Rift Valley. With rich red volcanic soils, steady rainfall and warm but gentle temperatures, it’s perfect for growing coffee.

Gichathaini Factory, a wet mill on the western slopes, works with around 770 smallholder members of the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative, each managing less than a hectare.

The cup is elegant and layered, with ripe raspberry, soft toffee sweetness and a gentle hint of peach rounding out each sip.

Context

Sourced from the Nyeri County region, the Kenya, Gichathaini AA represents the meticulous work of the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative. This specific lot, roasted by Reuben Hills, highlights the distinct character often associated with high-quality Kenyan exports. While Kenyan coffees are frequently celebrated for their vibrant acidity and complex profiles, this selection offers a nuanced experience featuring notes of ripe raspberry, soft toffee sweetness, and peach.

When evaluating such profiles, enthusiasts often look to the flavor wheel to better articulate the interplay between fruit-forward acidity and underlying sugars. Because Kenyan processing methods typically involve rigorous washing and drying stages, the resulting cup often achieves a remarkable clarity that distinguishes it from other origins. This Gichathaini AA offering serves as a compelling example of how regional terroir and cooperative processing combine to create a balanced, expressive coffee that remains a staple for those seeking depth and precision in their morning brew.
