From the roaster

This is the second fruit of Spyhouse’s relationship with importer JNP Coffee. You may recall the Hafi Natural we had in May of last year. Hafi, which means “close” in Kirundi, is a newer washing station in a remote part of the Muyinga Province. Before its construction in 2021, local farmers had to bring their harvested coffee cherries to the nearest wet mill, 20km away. Still, Hafi is a 6-hour drive from Bujumbura, Burundi’s largest city. This washing station currently produces only natural coffees, but they are building a wet mill, so we may see some washed coffees in the next few years!

JNP is the brainchild of Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. Jeanine is dedicated to reinvesting in the communities they source their coffee through education on coffee cultivation practices, profit sharing, and, most notably, gender equity initiatives. Women in Burundi still lack full property ownership rights and have less access to education, and JNP seeks to disrupt these norms by directly paying women for their work in coffee and providing them with financial literacy resources.

Context

This natural-processed Bourbon from Muyinga Province showcases the fruit-forward character typical of natural processing, where the coffee cherry dries intact around the bean. Spyhouse Coffee identifies bright citrus and berry notes alongside deeper praline sweetness—a layered profile reflecting both the varietal's inherent body and the fermentation complexity of the natural method. The lot draws from 2,000 smallholder farmers across Burundi's Muyinga region, a traditionally significant coffee-producing area. The Meyer lemon and strawberry notes suggest the clean acidity and delicate fruit typical of east African Bourbon lots, while the praline adds textural depth.
