Heart Coffee Roasters
Portland roaster that brought a clean, Nordic-influenced light-roast aesthetic to the US West Coast.
Heart Coffee Roasters was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2009 by Finnish-born former pro snowboarder Wille Yli-Luoma, whose Scandinavian sensibility shaped the company's bright, clean, light-roast style at a time when much American coffee still skewed darker. Its minimalist cafés and signature white-tiled aesthetic became widely imitated across the third-wave landscape. Heart built its reputation on transparent, fruit-forward coffees sourced broadly from origins including Ethiopia and Colombia, roasted to highlight acidity and clarity. The roastery helped cement Portland's status as a third-wave hub and remains a reference point for the West Coast interpretation of Nordic-style roasting.
