Las Brumas Honey SL28 is produced by our longtime partner and friend, Ernesto Menéndez. Located in the forest of the

Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, Las Brumas is totally different from any other coffee farm we've ever seen. At Las Brumas, Ernesto is doing a Wild Forest Coffee (WFC), inspired by how coffee was originally found in Yemen and Ethiopia. These SL28, Kenyan, coffee trees are spread out in the forest to be built up as wild grown as possible, without interfering with nature. He doesn’t apply and chemicals and just lets the nature create the character and strength of the coffee.

Nearly 70 years ago, the previous owner of the Drop Coffee exclusive farm Los Andes, planted SL28 seeds on the farm, seeds which had been taken home to El Salvador from a hunting trip in Kenya. Over time they've of course adapted to the different growing conditions and terroir, but still hold their trademark cooling finish and lime notes of this SL28 varietal. These SL28 seedlings have been brought to Las Brumas from Los Andes and planed into the Wild Coffee Project.

We've began working with Ernesto in 2015, and have been buying the coffee from both his farms Las Brumas and Los Andes ever since. It was a relationship that started purely based on geekiness in how to create a really high-end cup of coffee. Ernesto is a great producer who constantly cups and improves his methods of growing and processing, something that makes working together really fun, and he has a theory behind every decision in how this coffee was produced.

Ernesto has won the Cup of Excellence several times, and the coffee from Las Brumas has also previously won the World Barista Championship.

Context

Las Brumas is a honey-processed lot from the Apaneca-Ilamatepec Mountain Range in El Salvador's Santa Ana region, grown at elevation between 1460–2000 meters. Produced by Ernesto Menéndez, this SL28 varietal exemplifies the clarity and complexity the origin can offer when processed with care. Honey processing—where fruit remains in contact with the bean during drying—typically emphasizes sweetness and body, and this lot delivers on both fronts with white sugar notes alongside crisp acidity. The tasting profile balances ripe stone fruit and berry notes (ripe raspberry and strawberry) with bright citrus elements (crisp green grape), finishing clean with a subtle tartness. Roasted by Drop Coffee, this coffee sits at the intersection of fruit-forward clarity and refined sweetness.
