Origin Story

This tiny lot of Geisha was grown by Efrén Armando Rodríguez Badilla on his farm in the El Congo district, in the hills high above Santa María de Dota. It was honey-processed by the team at COOPEDOTA, which has been actively promoting exotic varieties like Geisha and helping us separate and source them from individual farms for the past eight seasons. It has a honeyed sweetness, flavors of apricot, pear, and orange, and reminds us of Earl Grey tea, with pronounced notes of bergamot.

Sensory

This coffee's delicate Geisha qualities is a pleasant balance in sweetness, with dried fruit and honey to round out the subtle bergamot aftertaste.

Context

The Costa Rica El Congo Geisha, sourced by Intelligentsia Coffee, represents a meticulous collaboration with producer Efrén Armando Rodríguez Badilla in the Santa María de Dota region. This specific lot highlights the Geisha varietal, a plant globally celebrated for its distinct, tea-like elegance and complex aromatic profile. Cultivated within the high-elevation landscapes of Costa Rica · El Congo, Santa María de Dota, the cherries undergo a honey processing method, which often bridges the gap between the clarity of washed coffees and the intensity of natural-processed beans.

When evaluating such profiles, enthusiasts often reference the flavor wheel to identify the interplay between delicate stone fruit notes and citrus-forward acidity. This particular offering balances a honeyed sweetness with bright layers of apricot, pear, and orange, underscored by the signature bergamot and Earl Grey tea qualities frequently associated with this esteemed varietal. It serves as a refined example of how regional terroir and careful post-harvest handling shape the final cup.
