From the roaster

We first visited Concepcion Chuito with Luis Pedro Zelaya Zemora in February 2011. He drove us to the highest part of the farm and we looked down at the valley at the parameter of Antigua down below. The coffee wasn't ready to cup at the time, but when samples came a few months later we fell in love with the coffee. Chuito is sure to be a crowd pleaser for those looking for an intensely sweet every day drinker. This coffee has big body and sweetness so will make both excellent espresso and filter coffee.

Context

Produced by Luis Pedro Zelaya Zemora in the renowned Antigua region, the Guatemala Chuito represents a classic expression of high-quality Bourbon cultivation. This lot is meticulously prepared using the washed process, a method often favored for highlighting the inherent clarity and structural acidity of the bean. When evaluating such coffees, enthusiasts often consult the flavor wheel to identify the nuanced interplay between sweetness and acidity.

Sourced by Kuma Coffee, this selection showcases the distinct profile of the 1600 masl harvest. While washed coffees are frequently celebrated for their clean, crisp profiles, the specific terroir of Antigua often contributes a unique depth to the cup. In this instance, the roast profile emphasizes indulgent, dessert-like characteristics, presenting a sensory experience defined by notes of Almond Joy, orange cream, and vanilla. It serves as a compelling example of how traditional varietals and careful processing continue to define the standard for Guatemalan specialty coffee.
