From the roaster

The Las Colinas community blend is named after Mozonte in Nueva Segovia, which means "between rivers and hills" in Nahuatl. Known for its fertile soil, rivers, and cloud-covered pine forests, Mozonte is about 235 kilometres from Managua and just 9 kilometres from Caravela’s Beneficio La Estrella in Ocotal. The region produces high-quality coffee thanks to its elevation, micro-climate, and experienced coffee-growing families.

The community has strong ties to Nicaragua's indigenous heritage, and coffee is a key part of their culture. Residents also make handcrafted ornaments and clay vessels using traditional techniques.

This coffee boasts a lovely mix of flavours, including notes of yellow fruits, citrus, passion fruit, and brown sugar, all with a creamy body.

Context

Sourced from the Mozonte region of Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, Las Colinas represents the distinct terroir of this high-altitude coffee-growing landscape. This specific lot, brought to market by Reuben Hills, showcases a vibrant profile defined by yellow fruits, citrus, and passion fruit, balanced by a grounding sweetness of brown sugar.

When evaluating coffees with such bright, fruit-forward characteristics, it is helpful to reference a flavor wheel to better identify the nuances between stone fruits and tropical acidity. While general profiles for Nicaraguan coffees can vary significantly based on processing methods and specific micro-climates, the clarity found in this selection highlights the meticulous care taken during harvest in the Nueva Segovia department. Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this coffee offers a compelling look at the current output from one of Central America’s most dynamic coffee-producing regions.
