From the roaster

Earlier this year, we featured the Tanzania Idwili AA, a larger bean from this same farm. Now, we’re excited for you to try its counterpart: the Peaberry, a smaller bean from the very same place. Peaberries occur naturally when only one seed develops inside the coffee cherry instead of two, resulting in a rounder shape and often a more concentrated flavor.

This Peaberry brings a richer, red-fruit character to the cup — a contrast to the AA’s bright citrus and tropical notes. Like the AA, this is a washed process coffee. But there’s more to come: the co-op is exploring new processing methods, including natural and anaerobic techniques. We will keep our eye out for these exciting coffees in the future.

Context

The Tanzania Idiwili Peaberry, sourced from the Idiwili producer, offers a distinct profile characterized by the unique shape of the peaberry bean. Roasted by Caffe Ladro, this selection features tasting notes of dark chocolate, raspberry, and caramel. Because this lot undergoes a washed process, the cup emphasizes clarity and the inherent acidity of the origin, allowing the fruit-forward raspberry notes to balance against the deeper, sugary base of caramel and chocolate.

When evaluating such specific flavor profiles, it is helpful to reference a flavor wheel to better identify the nuances between the bright berry acidity and the rich, roasted sweetness. While washed coffees are generally celebrated for their clean, consistent expression of terroir, the peaberry grading—where a single seed develops inside the coffee cherry—often results in a more concentrated and dense bean, contributing to the refined mouthfeel found in this Tanzanian offering.
