Coffee Details

The Gaturiri Factory, located in the Nyeri region of Kenya, processes coffee from around 1,100 small producers. Gaturiri has gained a reputation for excellence by consistently producing top quality coffee, with their emphases on cherry selection, proper washing and soaking and long, slow drying.

This year, we are offering the peaberry lot. Peaberry is a genetic mutation that occurs when the coffee cherry produces only one seed inside, instead of two. This creates a smaller, rounder bean that can have a unique, dense sweetness.

Context

The Kenya Gaturiri Peaberry, sourced by Case Coffee Roasters, represents the distinct profile of the Nyeri region. This lot is comprised of peaberries—a natural mutation where a single, rounded seed develops inside the coffee cherry instead of the typical two flat-sided beans. Because these seeds are smaller and denser, they often require careful attention during the roasting process to ensure even heat distribution.

This selection undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent acidity and clean, vibrant characteristics often associated with high-quality Kenyan coffees. When evaluating the cup, drinkers may identify notes of blackberry, maple syrup, and bing cherry. To better understand how these specific descriptors fit into the broader spectrum of coffee profiles, consult the flavor wheel. By focusing on the Gaturiri Factory’s meticulous preparation, this coffee offers a focused expression of its origin’s unique terroir.
