From the roaster
River of Bees
High in the misty forests of Oaxaca’s Sierra Sur, the smallholder producers of San Vicente Yogondoy grow the Pluma cultivar beneath a dense canopy of native shade. The community’s Zapotec name means “River of Bees,” a nod to the bees kept throughout the region for honey, pollination, and the continued health of this living landscape.
The farms are steep and remote, so ripe coffee cherries travel by foot and mule before processing. That journey naturally extends the time between harvest and depulping, creating a gentle fermentation that brings added depth and vibrancy while preserving the coffee’s delicate, easy drinking character.
Grown at 1,500 to 1,700 meters by the producers of San Vicente Yogondoy, this is a sweet, lively expression of Pluma and a beautiful reflection of Oaxaca.

Context
The San Vicente Yogondoy is a distinct offering from the Oaxaca region of Mexico, produced by the community of San Vicente Yogondoy. Cultivated at an elevation between 1500 and 1700 meters above sea level, this coffee features the Pluma varietal, a plant historically significant to the Oaxacan coffee landscape. This specific lot is brought to market by Chromatic Coffee, a roaster known for highlighting the unique terroir of high-altitude Mexican origins.
When evaluating coffees from this region, enthusiasts often look for a balance between bright acidity and deep, structural sweetness. Because the Pluma varietal is well-adapted to the mountainous terrain of Oaxaca, it frequently displays a complex profile that rewards careful brewing. To better understand the nuances found in this cup, we recommend referencing the flavor wheel to identify the specific aromatic compounds and taste characteristics present in your brew. This selection serves as a compelling example of the quality emerging from small-scale producers in Southern Mexico.
