From the roaster

A quality washed Red Bourbon from Rwanda. It has preserved the pleasant stewed fruit and spice notes associated with Rwandan coffee.

This is the first time we have launched a Rwandan decaffeinated coffee. Like the Ethiopian decaf that we launched earlier this year, this coffee nicely displays the character of its origin.

Context

This Rwandan offering from Colonna Coffee features the Red Bourbon varietal, a plant widely recognized for its balanced sweetness and complex acidity. As a washed coffee, this lot undergoes a meticulous processing method designed to highlight the inherent characteristics of the bean by removing the fruit flesh before drying. While washed coffees are often celebrated for their clean, crisp profiles, the roaster’s specific approach to these decaf beans has yielded a cup defined by notes of stewed fruit and spice. When evaluating such distinct flavor profiles, it can be helpful to consult a flavor wheel to better categorize the nuances found in the cup. This selection demonstrates how careful processing and roasting can maintain depth and character in decaffeinated coffee, providing a sophisticated experience for those seeking a vibrant, spice-forward brew without the caffeine.
