Sweet berry, cocoa & musk.

Bathed in the light of Huehuetenango’s highland sun, El Sol offers a vibrant natural cup. Grown at 1300–1500masl, this mix of Bourbon, Catuai and Caturra delivers sweet berry brightness, balanced by smooth cocoa and a hint of musk. The lot comes from the Vides family, whose story began in 1958 when Dr. Jorge Vides first planted coffee in La Libertad. Three generations later, his grandson Renardo continues the legacy, marrying quality farming with environmental stewardship and community care. After selective handpicking, cherries are pre-fermented, sorted, and slowly dried for up to 17 days. The result is a coffee that radiates warmth and energy, just like the sunrises that inspired its name.

Context

Produced by the Vides family in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala, El Sol represents a distinct expression of the Bourbon varietal. Grown at 1300-1500 masl, this lot undergoes a natural process, a method often associated with increased body and pronounced sweetness in the cup. Roasted by Five Senses, the coffee presents a profile characterized by sweet berry, cocoa, and musk.

While natural-processed coffees frequently exhibit heavier fruit-forward qualities and complex acidity, the specific interplay of the Bourbon varietal and the high-altitude climate of Huehuetenango contributes to the unique character found here. For those looking to better understand the nuances of these descriptors, referencing a flavor wheel can be a helpful tool for identifying the subtle musk and cocoa notes that define this particular harvest. This offering highlights the Vides family's commitment to quality and the diverse potential of Guatemalan coffee production.
