Hundreds of farming families, from amongst the iconic rolling hills of Rwanda, are behind this honey processed coffee gem. The birthplace of Muraho Trading Company, the pioneering Kilimbi washing station is special for a number of reasons. The coffee, delivered here by over 750 farmers in the surrounding hills (some arriving by boat across Lake Kivu!), has featured multiple times on Barista Competition stages and paved the way for natural and honey coffees. Kilimbi was one of the two first washing stations to be granted approval to produce natural and honey processed coffee in Rwanda by National Agricultural Export Development Board! The introduction of these processing methods to Rwanda has meant the discovery of a wider variety of flavours, like the distinctive blood orange and peach tea in this Kilimbi lot, that we know you’ll love.

Context

Produced by the Muraho Trading Company in Rwanda, the Kilimbi lot represents a sophisticated approach to regional processing. As a honey-processed coffee, it sits between the clean profile of washed beans and the intense fruitiness often associated with natural-processed coffees, which tend to show heavier fruit characteristics. You can learn more about how these techniques influence the final cup in our processing methods explainer.

Roasted by Five Senses, this selection highlights a vibrant profile defined by blood-orange, orange, and peach notes. The cup is further rounded out by a silky mouthfeel and a lingering toffee sweetness, showcasing the distinct stone-fruit qualities inherent to this specific harvest. To better understand how these descriptors fit into the broader spectrum of coffee profiles, we recommend consulting our flavor wheel. This coffee serves as an excellent example of the precision and care currently defining the Rwandan specialty coffee landscape.
