Riverdale Estate is a century-old family farm operated by trailblazing brothers Prakashan & Mohan Balaraman. The name ‘Kurinji’ comes from a flower native to the Shevaroy Hills that blooms just once every 12 years. Riverdale Estate is located in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu, a perfect setting for growing coffee. The region's unique microclimate, with cool temperatures and misty mornings, allows the coffee cherries to ripen gradually and develop richer flavours. This microlot from Riverdale Estate is carefully handpicked and washed three times before being fermented. The cherries are inoculated with Italian champagne yeast for precisely 80 hours and left to sun dry for up to 30 days.

Context

The Kurinji, Champagne Natural, produced by Prakashan and Mohan Balaraman, represents a distinct expression from the Shevaroy Hills of India. This lot is processed using the Champagne Natural method, a technique that often influences the final cup profile by introducing unique fermentation characteristics. While processing methods vary significantly in their impact on acidity and body, natural-processed coffees frequently exhibit heavier fruit tones and increased sweetness compared to their washed counterparts.

Roasted by Five Senses, this coffee is noted for its sparkling champagne, green apple, and brioche qualities. When evaluating such complex profiles, tasters often find it helpful to reference a flavor wheel to better categorize the nuanced acidity and structural notes present in the cup. By highlighting the specific regional terroir of the Shevaroy Hills, this offering provides a compelling look at the evolving landscape of Indian specialty coffee production and the impact of innovative post-harvest processing.
