Origin Story
This Geisha varietal lot was grown by Jesus Ureña Hidalgo at his farm, La Bandera, in the El Congo district high above Santa María de Dota. It was honey-processed by the team at COOPEDOTA, which has been actively promoting exotic varieties like Geisha and helping us separate and source them from individual farms for the past eight seasons.
Sensory
Our third Geisha offering from Costa Rica beautifully illustrates the sweetness that is inherent in this varietal, with a slight zest of candied orange peel to round it out.
— Intelligentsia Coffee
Context
Produced by Jesus Ureña Hidalgo in the El Congo region of Santa María de Dota, this Costa Rica La Bandera Geisha represents a meticulous approach to cultivation. The Geisha varietal is globally celebrated for its distinct, tea-like elegance and complex aromatic profile, often serving as a benchmark for high-quality specialty coffee. By utilizing a honey process, which leaves a portion of the fruit’s mucilage on the bean during drying, the producer encourages a unique balance of body and acidity.
Offered by Intelligentsia Coffee, this specific lot highlights the interplay between varietal character and processing technique. While the roaster identifies notes of sweetness and candied orange peel, enthusiasts can further explore how these sensory experiences align with the broader flavor wheel. This coffee serves as a compelling example of how regional terroir in Costa Rica can elevate the inherent qualities of the Geisha plant, resulting in a refined and nuanced cup.
