From the roaster

This is a washed, medium-bodied coffee from just over the Bismarck Range that borders the Western Highlands Province and Sepik Province. Coffee from Simbai is transported via plane due to the remoteness of the mountainous terrain of fertile volcanic soil.

Out of the nine million people in PNG, around 2.5 million (30%) are involved in coffee. Exports of coffee account for approximately 6% (US$72 million) of the country’s GDP, and it’s the second leading agricultural product after palm oil.

Context

The Papua New Guinea: Simbai Balus Kopi 2025, sourced by Keia & Martyn's Coffee, offers a compelling look at the high-elevation terroir of the Simbai region. Grown between 1600 and 1900 masl, this lot features the Typica varietal, which is historically celebrated for its balanced cup profile and refined sweetness. Because this coffee undergoes a washed process, the inherent characteristics of the bean are highlighted with clarity, allowing the nuanced notes of dried fig, green grape, and plum to shine alongside a structured finish of cocoa powder and roasted hazelnut.

When evaluating such complex profiles, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better identify the interplay between fruit-forward acidity and earthy undertones. While washed coffees are generally prized for their clean, vibrant acidity and consistent expression of origin, the specific combination of Typica and the unique microclimate of Simbai provides a distinct experience that bridges the gap between delicate tea-like qualities and rich, nutty depth.
