About: Finca Buenos Aires sits high in the Dipilto Mountains of northern Nicaragua, close to the Honduran border. Founded by Luis Emilio Valladárez more than 50 years ago, the 75-hectare farm is now managed by his son, Olman, continuing a family legacy built around quality coffee.

This particular plot, known as El Lino, forms part of Finca Buenos Aires and is planted with Caturra. A natural mutation of Bourbon first identified in Brazil, Caturra is a smaller, more compact coffee tree, allowing producers to plant at higher densities and making farm management and harvesting more efficient. It has since become an important variety throughout Central America.

Beyond coffee, the Valladárez family supports local public health campaigns and community celebrations. Their approach centres on creating a sustainable, family-minded culture around the farm and supporting the people involved in producing their coffees.

Context

Sourced from the Dipilto region of Nueva Segovia, this Nicaragua offering from Proud Mary Coffee showcases the work of producer Luis Emilio Valladárez. The coffee is comprised entirely of the Caturra varietal, a plant known for its high yield and adaptability, which is grown at elevations ranging from 1000 to 1450 meters above sea level.

This lot undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent clarity and acidity of the bean by removing the fruit flesh before drying. While washed coffees are often celebrated for their clean, vibrant profiles, the specific nuances of this harvest reflect the unique terroir of the Nicaraguan highlands. To better understand how these regional characteristics and processing techniques translate into the cup, we encourage you to reference our flavor wheel when evaluating the distinct qualities of this particular roast.
