From the roaster

In honor of Women's Health and History Month, PT's will be donating $2 per bag sold of coffees from women producers to Grounds for Health. These coffees also include La Primavera SL28 Natural and Maria Estela La Perla Washed.

This round-bodied cup opens with aromas of raisin, toasted hazelnut, and toffee. When sipped, we found flavors of Swiss chocolate, raisin, black tea, and blood orange. It has a soft baked apple acidity, with a finish of black tea and nutmeg.

The Story

Imported by our friends at Crop to Cup:

“Introduced to us through the Good Coffee Program outreach in Oaxaca, this is one of many informal associations—typically comprised of 2-10 families—sprinkled around the Miramar de Yucuhiti trading post in the highlands of Oaxaca’s Mixteca Region.

“Red de Miramar is led by charismatic and dependable Cecilio Pérez Vásquez. His neighbors are the region’s most dedicated specialty producers, including this lot’s producer, Andrea García Feria. This group has adopted a cooperative approach to promote specialty coffee as their way to take control over the economic destiny of their community.”

Grounds for Health

Grounds for Health has provided women’s health programs in coffee communities since 1996. These programs include innovative HPV screenings and life-saving treatment of preventable diseases, such as cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is a nearly 100% preventable disease — yet in the next 15 years, it could kill almost 4.5 million women, many of whom live in low-income countries where coffee is grown.

They have kept women healthy in Central and South America, and their current programs are in Ethiopia and Kenya.

Context

The Red de Miramar Washed, sourced from the Oaxaca region of Mexico, represents the collaborative efforts of the Red de Miramar producer group. Grown at an elevation of 1700-1800 masl, this lot undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent clarity and acidity of the bean. When evaluating such profiles, roasters like PT's Coffee Roasting often look for a balance between sweetness and structure.

In the cup, this coffee presents notes of raisin, black tea, and toffee. While washed coffees are generally celebrated for their clean, crisp finish, the specific interplay of these flavors can be further explored by referencing a flavor wheel. By focusing on the distinct characteristics of the Oaxaca terroir, this selection offers a refined look at the potential of Mexican specialty coffee, emphasizing a sophisticated profile that bridges the gap between deep, sugary undertones and delicate, tea-like aromatics.
