From the roaster

Grown just outside Nairobi in Kiambu County, this washed lot presents a selection of peaberries, small round beans distinguished not only by their size and shape, but also by the rare coffee cherries that produce them. Unlike most coffee cherries, which contain two seeds, these cherries naturally develop only one.

Intelligentsia Coffee

Context

This washed peaberry from Intelligentsia Coffee originates in Kenya's Kiambu County, a region known for producing coffees with distinctive character. Peaberries—naturally occurring mutations where a single bean develops instead of the typical pair—are prized by some for their concentrated flavor profile and unique density. The washed processing method emphasizes the coffee's inherent brightness and acidity, allowing the varietal's properties to shine through cleanly. Kenya's high-altitude growing conditions and volcanic soils typically contribute to the origin's signature complexity, though individual lot expression varies considerably. This lot represents a specific harvest's interpretation of what Kiambu County terroir and careful production can deliver.
