From the roaster

Mukangu Factory is situated in the Ruchu sub-location of Kangema Sub-county, Murang’a County, in Kenya’s Central Highlands—one of the country's most renowned coffee-producing regions. The wet mill is operated by the Ruchu Gacharage Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), which also manages the Ruona, Kahiga, Kamichee, and Ruchu factories.

Founded in the 1970s, Mukangu works with around 800 smallholder producers, the majority of whom farm less than one hectare. Alongside coffee, many cultivate crops such as maize and beans to support household food security and diversify their income.

Context

Sourced from the Ruchu Gacharage Farmers Co-Op in Murang'a County, the Mukangu AB represents the classic profile of Kenyan coffee production. This lot features the SL28 varietal, a plant celebrated for its resilience and ability to produce complex, vibrant acidity. Cultivated at elevations between 1650 and 1850 meters, the cherries undergo a fully washed method, a technique often employed to highlight the inherent clarity and brightness of the bean.

Roasted by Father Carpenter, this coffee balances its structural acidity with deeper, sweeter undertones. While the roaster identifies notes of dark chocolate, citrus fruits, and honey, drinkers can explore the broader flavor wheel to identify the nuances that emerge as the cup cools. By focusing on the intersection of traditional processing and high-altitude cultivation, this selection offers a refined look at the distinct character of Kenyan coffee.
