From the roaster

Kii factory is one of three owned by the Rungeto Farmers Co-op. We have often purchased from another of their factories named Karimikui. The Kii river runs by the factory and is both the reason for its name but also the water source for their coffee washing stations.

The peaberry is an intense and bright expression of Kirinyaga coffee. Deep and powerful flavours of fresh berries and a sweet hibiscus quality.

Context

The Kii PB, sourced from the Kirinyaga region of Kenya, represents a classic expression of the SL28 varietal. Produced by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society and roasted by Father Carpenter, this lot undergoes a fully washed method, a technique often utilized to highlight the crisp acidity and vibrant clarity for which the region is renowned.

In the cup, this coffee presents distinct notes of blackberry, raspberry, and hibiscus. While individual profiles vary, coffees from this area are frequently evaluated against the flavor wheel for their characteristic brightness and complex fruit-forward qualities. By focusing on the meticulous processing of the SL28 cherry, the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society ensures a clean, refined cup profile that showcases the unique terroir of Kirinyaga. This selection serves as an excellent example of how specific varietal cultivation and traditional washing methods contribute to the nuanced sensory experience expected from high-quality Kenyan coffee.
