From the roaster

Mukangu Factory is situated in the Ruchu sub-location of Kangema Sub-county, Murang’a County, in Kenya’s Central Highlands—one of the country's most renowned coffee-producing regions. The wet mill is operated by the Ruchu Gacharage Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), which also manages the Ruona, Kahiga, Kamichee, and Ruchu factories.

Founded in the 1970s, Mukangu works with around 800 smallholder producers, the majority of whom farm less than one hectare. Alongside coffee, many cultivate crops such as maize and beans to support household food security and diversify their income.

Context

Sourced from the Ruchu Gacharage Farmers Co-Op in Murang'a County, this Mukangu AB lot represents the classic profile of Kenyan coffee. Produced at elevations between 1650 and 1850 masl, the beans undergo a fully washed process, which typically emphasizes a clean, vibrant acidity and refined clarity in the cup. This specific offering features the SL28 varietal, a cultivar widely celebrated for its complex, layered character.

Roasted by Father Carpenter, this espresso selection balances the inherent brightness of the region with deeper, grounding elements. The resulting profile highlights notes of dark chocolate, citrus fruits, and honey. When evaluating these characteristics, drinkers may find it helpful to reference the flavor wheel to better identify the nuances between the fruit-forward acidity and the sweet, cocoa-toned finish. This coffee serves as a quintessential example of how meticulous processing and high-quality varietals define the Kenyan coffee experience.
