Explosion of lemon & blackberry fruits with a buttery mouthfeel.

Cultivated in small coffee gardens around Mount Kenya, this origin represents everything we love about Kenyan coffees. Over 600 smallholder farmers deliver their hand-picked cherries to Gatomboya Factory, a washing station run by the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. Named after the local water source, Gatomboya Factory is a washing station set around 120 km from Nairobi, on the rich volcanic soils of Mount Kenya. It is run by the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society, who offers its members access to funds from the previous year's harvest to provide pre-financing for school fees, improve operations, and emergency needs. Over 600 local members provide the station with hand-picked cherries cultivated in small coffee gardens (average less than 1 hectare). The results of this careful selection are juicy lemon, blackberry and butter.

Context

Sourced from the slopes of Mount Kenya, the Gatomboya AB is a quintessential example of the high-quality output from the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. This lot undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent acidity and clean, vibrant profiles for which the region is renowned. Roasted by Five Senses, the coffee presents a distinct sensory experience characterized by notes of blackberry, butter, and lemon.

When evaluating such profiles, it is helpful to reference a flavor wheel to better identify the nuances between fruit-forward acidity and the creamy mouthfeel often found in Kenyan coffees. While washed coffees are generally celebrated for their clarity and precision, the specific interplay of citrus and dark fruit in this selection reflects the meticulous post-harvest practices maintained by the cooperative. This offering serves as a compelling look at the intersection of traditional processing and the unique terroir of the Nyeri region.
