We are excited to share the winning lot from the 2026 CODECH competition from Andrés Recinos Pérez. Every year the CODECH cooperative in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala hosts an internal competition for their members to showcase their crop and receive a premium for placing within the top 10. This year's winner Andrés produced an excellent coffee with tons of red fruit sweetness and complex floral notes, which blew the judges away, receiving the highest score on two of the three days of the competition. We decided to submit this coffee into the Global Coffee Awards after seeing how well it scored and ended up receiving a Finalist Recognition award. This goes to show how much care and effort Andrés puts into his crop each year and we hope to continue to buy his coffees in the coming years.

Context

Produced by Andrés Recinos Pérez in the high-elevation terrain of Guatemala · Huehuetenango, this lot showcases the distinct character of the Caturra varietal. Grown at 1800 masl, the coffee undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent acidity and clean profile of the bean. Ozo Coffee presents this selection with vibrant tasting notes of watermelon, rose, and ginger ale.

While flavor profiles are subjective, washed coffees are often celebrated for their clarity and brightness, allowing the nuances of the terroir to shine through. When evaluating such complex aromatics, referencing a flavor wheel can be a helpful tool for identifying the delicate floral and fruit-forward characteristics present in the cup. This specific offering serves as a compelling example of the meticulous cultivation practices found within the Huehuetenango region, balancing traditional processing with the unique qualities of the Caturra plant.
