The Story

Pacamara is a cross between the giant, low-yielding Maragogype variety and the traditional Pacas variety. El Socorro's Pacamara is grown around 1,700 meters, near the Maracaturra lot. Like all of El Socorro's coffees, the coffee is processed directly on the farm.

Direct Trade

Juan Diego de La Cerda's Finca El Socorro continues to prove itself one of the best coffee farms in Guatemala, with an enviable trophy case: 1st Place in the Guatemala Cup of Excellence competition in 2007, 2011, 2020, and 2023; 4th place in 2008; and top five in the Coffee of the Year competition in 2012.

The farm's consistent quality made us jump at the chance to become Direct Trade partners with Juan Diego more than a decade ago. We're proud to continue offering El Socorro's excellent coffees year after year.

Context

This Pacamara Washed selection from PT's Coffee Roasting highlights the meticulous work of producer Juan Diego de la Cerda in the Palencia region of Guatemala. The Pacamara varietal, a deliberate cross between the Pacas and Maragogype cultivars, is widely recognized for its distinctively large bean size and complex cup profile. By utilizing the washed process, the producer emphasizes the inherent clarity and structural acidity of the coffee, allowing the specific characteristics of the Palencia terroir to shine through.

When evaluating this lot, drinkers may identify notes of Rocky Road, yellow apple, and vanilla wafer. To better understand how these specific descriptors fit into the broader spectrum of coffee quality, consult the flavor wheel. This coffee serves as a compelling example of how careful cultivation and traditional processing methods can elevate a well-known varietal, offering a balanced experience that bridges the gap between indulgent sweetness and crisp, fruit-forward brightness.
