From the roaster

Kivanga Estate sits at 1,800 masl in Embu, where owner Morris Njage grows the classic Kenyan SL varieties across 7.5 hectares. Kivanga is on the smaller side for an estate farm in Kenya, but still operates its own wet mill where all of its coffees are processed. For this lot, ripe cherry was sorted and floated, then pulped and fermented in open tanks for 36–48 hours before being thoroughly washed and dried. We cupped this coffee at Kamavindi Coffee Labs in Embu, not far from Kivanga, and were impressed by its depth and intensity of flavor. The cup presents a familiar but exceptional Kenyan profile of juicy red and dark fruits — cranberry, currant, elderberry — with citrus accents and warming notes of candied ginger and clove tea.

Context

Sourced from the Embu region of Kenya, the Kivanga lot is a testament to the meticulous cultivation practices of producer Morris Njage. This coffee features the SL varietal, a lineage historically celebrated for its complex acidity and structural depth. Processed using the washed method, the beans undergo a rigorous cleaning stage that typically highlights the inherent clarity and brightness of the terroir.

Roasted by Tandem Coffee Roasters, this selection presents a vibrant profile characterized by notes of cranberry, currant, and elderberry, balanced by the warmth of candied ginger and clove tea. While washed coffees are often prized for their clean, crisp finish, the specific interplay of citrus and spice found here invites a deeper exploration of the flavor wheel. Grown at 1800 masl, this Kenyan offering exemplifies the high-quality standards expected from the Embu region, providing a sophisticated cup that bridges the gap between delicate floral tea notes and intense, fruit-forward acidity.
