Roaster's Notes:

This is a special coffee for us. Many years ago, we were on vacation in Nayarit and saw a coffee farm up on a hill. Seeing their community for ourselves and working with ASTAL and San Cristobol Coffee to bring their coffee to our cafes has been a wonderful experience of relationship coffee. ASTAL is located in the community of La Yerba, where the economy is based upon the annual harvest of its two most important crops—avocados and coffee. With one harvest immediately following the other, revenue is only generated for part of the year. By working with CAFESUMEX and San Cristobal, farmers receive a price adjustment four to six months after the harvest in accordance with the quality of their coffee. This comes at a very important time when farmer's economic options are limited.

Victrola Coffee Roasters

Context

Victrola Coffee Roasters' Mexico La Yerba Afrutada showcases the natural-processed approach, which typically emphasizes fruit-forward character through extended contact between bean and fruit during drying. This Bourbon varietal from Terruño Nayarita in Nayarit arrives with bright stone fruit and melon notes—a profile well-suited to the natural process, where fermentation can amplify inherent sweetness and aromatics. The roaster identifies peach, melon, and orange, suggesting a coffee that bridges citrus brightness with stone fruit depth. For those exploring how processing influences flavor development, or seeking to understand Bourbon's characteristic expressions, this lot offers a clear example of what the varietal and method can deliver together.
