From the roaster

We feel incredibly fortunate to be working with JNP Coffee to bring you Hafi, a truly special coffee from the remote hills of Burundi’s Muyinga Province. Located in the heart of East Africa, Burundi is a small, landlocked country bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Muyinga Province is particularly remote, accessible only after a long, rugged journey from Bujumbura (now known as Gitega, the political capital of Burundi), where the country’s largest city once served as the central hub for commerce. Hafi, meaning “close” in Kirundi, reflects the transformative impact this washing station has had on the local farmers. Before its establishment, producers faced long, difficult journeys to deliver their harvest, often unable to meet same-day processing standards. Today, the new wet mill brings them closer to home, unlocking new possibilities for quality and consistency. Crafted using natural processing methods, Hafi offers a deeply aromatic cup with a juicy mouthfeel and tasting notes of strawberry, tropical fruit, blackberry, and a hint of cacao nib. The result is a rich, vibrant, and beautifully balanced coffee, with a smooth fruitiness and cacao finish that lingers on the palate. We’re honored to be part of this journey, working with nearly 2,000 dedicated farmers who have produced an exceptional coffee we’re proud to share with you. Hafi is just the beginning—this community’s potential is limitless.

How to Brew It:

This coffee is best enjoyed slowly (as hard as that might be) - we recommend using pour over or filter methods to get the most clarity from the depth of flavor in the beans, or immersion methods for more body and less clarity to the complexity. We brew with a 1:15 coffee to water ratio, with a brew temperature of 202-207 degrees.

Context

This Burundi Hafi Natural from Muyinga Province showcases the Bourbon varietal at 1700–1800 masl, processed naturally by JNP Coffee. Natural-processed coffees tend toward heavier fruit expression and body, qualities evident here in the roaster's tasting profile of blackberry and strawberry jelly layered with cacao nib and cane sugar. The combination suggests both bright fruit character and deeper chocolate undertones—a balance typical of high-altitude Burundian lots where altitude and processing method interact to develop complexity. Whether these flavors resonate with your palate depends on your preference for fruit-forward, naturally-processed profiles.
