Rob says: Over 9,730 farmers deliver cherry to KIANGOTHE Factory. Farmers cultivate SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru-11 variety coffees at 1,700 to 1,900 meters above sea level. Most farms are small, with 200 to 350 trees on average and most of the labor is done by the family. The factory is operated by Kabare Farmers’ Cooperative Society.

Kirinyaga County is nestled at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, roughly 112 km from Nairobi. The region is well-known for its exceptional coffee. Sucafina partners with numerous coffee farmers and cooperatives in the region, working with them to improve processing capacity, access to agricultural inputs and agricultural practices.

Context

Produced by the Kabare Farmers Cooperative Society, this Kenyan offering from the Kirinyaga region showcases the distinct profile of the SL28 varietal. Grown at elevations between 1700 and 1900 meters, the coffee undergoes a washed process, a method typically employed to highlight the inherent acidity and clean cup profile often associated with high-quality East African beans. Caffènation has roasted this lot to emphasize notes of sweet cane sugar, grapefruit, and plum.

The Kirinyaga region is widely recognized for its volcanic soils and favorable climate, which contribute to the complexity found in many Kenyan coffees. When evaluating such profiles, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better identify the nuanced citrus and stone fruit characteristics that define this specific AA grade. By focusing on the meticulous preparation of the SL28 cherry, this selection provides a clear expression of its terroir, balancing vibrant acidity with a refined, sugary sweetness.
