Want peaches, nectarines and plums galore? Popping, jammy acidity? Look no further, my friend-- the Kenya Karatu Peaberry is here! This vibrant coffee is laden with intense stone fruit flavors, anchored with caramel and citrus undertones. Sipping the Karatu is a treat, starting with beautiful aromatics and finishing with a sugary sweet aftertaste.

Situated on the red volcanic slopes of the Aberdare Mountains in Kiambu, Kenya, is the Gitwe Cooperative Society of Farmers. 900 smallholder farmers, each with an average of 150 coffee trees, deliver their ripe cherries to the Karatu Coffee Factory. This lot is made up exclusively of the peaberries, or the tiniest beans from the harvest. Peaberries are simply a rare mutation of the coffee seed inside the cherry that happens when only one seed develops in the cherry, instead of two.

Context

Sourced from the Kiambu region of Kenya, the Kenya Karatu Peaberry represents a distinct selection from the Gitwe Cooperative Society of Farmers. Peaberry beans, which develop as a single, rounded seed within the coffee cherry rather than the typical pair, are often sought after for their unique density and concentrated flavor profiles. When evaluating such coffees, enthusiasts often consult the flavor wheel to better identify the nuanced acidity and sweetness inherent in high-quality East African lots.

This specific offering, roasted by Case Coffee Roasters, highlights a vibrant profile characterized by stone fruits like peaches, nectarines, and plums, balanced by notes of caramel and citrus. While Kenyan coffees are frequently celebrated for their bright, wine-like acidity and complex fruit-forward characteristics, this peaberry lot provides a focused expression of the terroir found within the Kiambu district, showcasing the meticulous processing standards maintained by the Gitwe Cooperative.
