The Story

This uncommon varietal is a hybrid of the giant Maragogype bean and the more traditional and sweet Caturra. It is a productive plant but susceptible to leaf rust, so it must be carefully monitored. This lot grows at 1,753 MASL. After harvest the coffee is washed and carefully processed directly on the farm.

Maracaturra's unique characteristics, along with the dedication and skill of the producers at Finca El Socorro, create a coffee that is delicate, flavorful, and sweet.

Direct Trade

Finca El Socorro is a model of sustainable farm management. The river that bisects the farm provides all the water for the wet mill, solar panels generate nearly all the electricity needed for daily operations, and meticulous processing is performed on-site. With four First Place finishes in the Guatemala Cup of Excellence since 2007, the quality of Juan Diego de la Cerda's coffee speaks for itself. See the sights from our 2023 visit on our blog.

Context

This Maracaturra Washed lot, sourced from producer Juan Diego de la Cerda in the Palencia region of Guatemala, showcases the distinct characteristics of its unique parentage. The Maracaturra varietal is a natural hybrid of Maragogype and Caturra, often recognized for its exceptionally large bean size and complex cup profile. By utilizing a washed process, the producer emphasizes the clarity and structural acidity of the coffee, which PT's Coffee Roasting highlights through notes of cocoa powder, grilled lemon, and nougat.

When evaluating such specific profiles, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better articulate the interplay between the bright citrus acidity and the deeper, confectionary sweetness found in this harvest. Because washed coffees typically prioritize the inherent qualities of the bean over the influence of fruit fermentation, this selection offers a precise look at the terroir of Palencia at 1753 masl.
