ABOUT

Java, or “Javanica” as it’s known in Nicaragua, has one of the most unusual origin stories in the Mierisch family’s coffee collection.

Doctor Mierisch and his son, Erwin II, were driving home from the farm when they spotted a man selling fruit on the side of the road. They stopped for a quick purchase—and noticed the man had a bag labeled “Java.” Curious, they asked about it. The man claimed the bag held seeds of a rare coffee variety called Java.

Erwin Jr. was skeptical, but the Doc felt for the man and decided to buy the seeds anyway. As it turns out, the man wasn’t bluffing—it really was the longberry Java variety. They suspect he may have once worked at a nearby coffee nursery that had gone bankrupt, a place known for its research and experimentation.

And just like that, Java found its way to Nicaragua.

Context

The El Limoncillo Javanica, sourced from the Yasicasur region of Matagalpa, Nicaragua, represents a distinct offering from the Mierisch family. This lot features the Javanica varietal, a plant known for its unique profile and historical lineage. Cultivated at elevations between 850 and 1100 meters, the cherries undergo a natural process, a method where the fruit remains intact during drying to influence the final cup character.

Offered by Seven Seeds, this coffee presents a complex sensory experience characterized by notes of pineapple, rose water, and strawberry milkshake. While natural-processed coffees often exhibit heavier fruit-forward profiles and increased sweetness, the specific expression of these attributes can be further explored using a flavor wheel. This selection highlights the intersection of careful regional cultivation and meticulous post-harvest handling, providing a clear look at the potential of Nicaraguan production when paired with specific varietal selection.
