From the roaster

Black Gold is the coffee that started everything. Our first blend, this seasonal espresso was created to be an approachable crowd-pleaser, and it soon became the foundation of everything we do at the Roastery.

We serve Black Gold daily at our Espresso Bar alongside our other sensational coffee offerings. It’s favoured by many, part of people’s daily routines and we couldn’t be more proud of it. In 2014, it won two gold stars in the UK Great Taste Awards.

Black Gold is hand-roasted to just beyond first crack to give it a rich espresso zing while still retaining the natural flavours gained at origin. Its rich chocolate and biscuit base make it very drinkable. It’s a post-blended coffee, currently made up of Fazenda do Salto, Minca and Finca Serbia.

Context

Black Gold No.3, produced by Coaltown Coffee, represents a classic approach to roast profile development, focusing on comfort and consistency. By emphasizing notes of nutty milk chocolate and biscuit, this selection aligns with traditional flavor expectations often associated with medium-to-dark roast profiles. These profiles are frequently sought after for their balanced sweetness and full-bodied mouthfeel, making them particularly well-suited for espresso-based drinks or morning brews that pair well with milk.

When evaluating coffees with such distinct, dessert-like characteristics, it is helpful to reference the flavor wheel to better identify the nuances within the cocoa and grain categories. While some specialty coffees lean toward bright acidity or floral aromatics, selections like Black Gold No.3 prioritize a smooth, approachable experience. Understanding how these specific flavor descriptors interact can help drinkers refine their preferences and better appreciate the craftsmanship involved in achieving such a stable, reliable cup profile.
