Description:

El Oso Peru, a coffee that brings together rich sweetness and vibrant fruit. Expect comforting notes of blackberry, cacao nibs and agave, creating a beautifully balanced cup that's equally approachable and complex. Roasted as a versatile omni roast, El Oso shines as a sweet, juicy filter while producing a rich, syrupy espresso with layers of fruit and cacao.

Grown between 1,350–1,890 masl in the San Ignacio region of Peru, the El Oso Project is produced by members of Cooperativa Agraria Frontera San Ignacio. The project was established to help protect the forests surrounding the Santuario Nacional Tabaconas Namballe, a vital habitat for endangered spectacled bears and other native wildlife. Working with organic farming methods, producers actively restore native forests, improve biodiversity and cultivate coffee in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

Alongside conservation efforts, the cooperative invests in quality-focused infrastructure, including solar drying tents, improved fermentation equipment, composting facilities and its own dry mill. Regular farmer training and sustainable farming practices ensure exceptional consistency while reducing environmental impact, resulting in a clean, sweet washed coffee that reflects both the region's unique terroir and the project's commitment to protecting it.

Context

Produced by the Cooperativa Agraria Frontera San Ignacio in the San Ignacio region of Peru, El Oso is a washed-process coffee featuring the Caturra varietal. This specific lot is roasted by Coaltown Coffee, highlighting a profile defined by notes of blackberry, cacao nibs, and agave. Because this coffee undergoes the washed process, it typically emphasizes the inherent clarity and acidity of the bean, allowing the distinct characteristics of the Caturra variety to shine through.

When evaluating the complexity of such a profile, it is helpful to reference a flavor wheel to better identify the interplay between the fruit-forward blackberry notes and the deeper, earthier tones of cacao. Grown at elevations ranging from 1350 to 1890 meters above sea level, this Peruvian offering showcases the meticulous work of the cooperative in maintaining quality across their harvest. It serves as a refined example of how regional terroir and careful processing influence the final cup.
