‘Endele’ which translates to ‘calm and regal’ is a perfect description of this coffee as the flavor is both approachable and exciting. Hailing from near the Rwenzori Mountains of Western Uganda, this coffee comes from a group of young enterprising people in Rubiziri Uganda. Manzi (production manager), George (operations manager), and Sam (sourcing and sustainability manager) began their operation a few years ago after receiving pre-harvest financing from Ibero Uganda, a company owned by NKG that primarily focuses on milling and exportation. They work with 400 core famers and 40 seasonal employees, often visiting their partners in the off-season. This coffee is delicious and approachable but has enough complex flavors to entice coffee afficionados.

Context

Sourced from the Endele Washing Station in the Rubiziri region of Western Uganda, this lot represents the diverse potential of the country’s coffee production. Grown at 1750 masl, this selection features a mixed varietal composition and undergoes a natural process. Generally, natural-processed coffees are known for their heavier body and pronounced fruit-forward characteristics, often resulting in a syrupy mouthfeel.

Roasted by Ozo Coffee, this specific offering highlights a profile defined by raspberry jam, molasses, and cherry. These descriptors align with the sweet, dark fruit categories often found on the flavor wheel. By utilizing the natural method, the producers allow the coffee cherry to dry around the bean, which frequently imparts a distinct sweetness and complexity to the final cup. This Uganda Endele lot serves as a compelling example of how regional terroir and careful post-harvest handling shape the sensory experience of East African coffees.
